Men’s Lax Drops 10-6 Decision to Farmingdale State

ONEONTA, NY – Visiting Farmingdale State grabbed the lead 5:21 into the first quarter and never relinquished it in a 10-6 victory over Hartwick's men's lacrosse team on Saturday at Wright Stadium. The Hawks fell behind 6-1 in the second quarter. They cut the deficit to four twice in the second half but they could get no closer.

The loss drops the Hawks to 0-2 overall this season. The Rams improve to 3-1 with the win.

Jacob Sasche (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) led Hartwick with a College-best three goals in the game. Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayettville-Manlius) added two tallies for 'Wick and Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) registered a goal and two assists.

Farmingdale's Michael Cegielski and Tyler Rifice did much of the damage for the Rams on the day. Cegielski tallied a game-high five times with Refice adding two goals and a game-high four assists.

Cegielski and Rifice would tally 1:15 apart in the first period as the Rams grabbed a 2-0 lead. Sasche answered for Hartwick at the 3:02 mark of the period to pull the Hawks to within one but another Cegielski tally with 25 seconds left gave Farmingdale a 3-1 edge after 15 minutes.

Mike Strebel added to the Rams' total 4:37 into the second quarter for a 4-1 lead. Cegielski then netted back-to-back goals for a 6-1 edge. Simmons' tallies occurred 16 seconds apart to quickly make it a 6-3 game. Rifice closed the half with a goal 1:45 from the halftime horn.

Conor Pittard looks as if he'd get the only goal of the third quarter as he gave the Rams an 8-3 edge at 5:41 of the quarter. Sasche got one back though for 'Wick with eight ticks left.

With an 8-4 lead, Farmingdale scored a pair of goals 1:59 apart to extend the lead to six. Petillo then scored for Hartwick from David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional) with 4:48 remaining and Sasche tacked on the day's final goal with 3:33 left. The Hawks got two more shots off the rest of the way but couldn't find the goal.

The Rams held a wide margin in shots, 36-23. They edged the Hawks in ground balls, 32-31. Farmingdale would also win 16-of-19 face-offs in the contest.
