Hartwick Tennis Set for NCAA First Round Clash with Tufts

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Hartwick Hawks women's tennis team heard its name called for the first round of the 2025-26 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, where they will take on Tufts University. The match will be hosted by Middlebury College.

The Hawks punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament following another dominant campaign, finishing with a perfect Empire 8 conference record for the fourth consecutive season while securing their fourth straight regular season title. Hartwick posted a 14-4 overall record and rolled through the Empire 8 Championship Tournament in the fall, defeating Alfred 4-0 in the semifinal before earning a 4-1 victory over Geneseo on their home courts at Wilber Park.

Phoebe Olson (Jamestown, N.D.) was named Tournament MVP, leading the Hawks at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. Olson also earned her second consecutive Doubles Team of the Year honor alongside partner Gianna Leggieri (Ballston Lake, N.Y.). Samantha Lantzy (Valatie, N.Y.) was recognized as the Empire 8 Torchbearer, awarded to the student-athlete with the highest GPA among competitors, while head coach Samantha Butcher secured her third Empire 8 Coach of the Year honor.

Hartwick now turns its attention to Tufts, which enters the tournament with a 12-6 record. The Jumbos earned an at-large bid following a first-round exit to No. 18 Amherst in the NESCAC Tournament and own a signature win over No. 12 Bowdoin during the regular season. The two squads will face off on Friday at Middlebury College, time will be determined in the following days.
