ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Hartwick College women's tennis team returned home Friday afternoon for an Empire 8 Conference matchup with Geneseo, falling to the Knights by a 6-1 score at Wilber Park Tennis Courts.
With the loss, the Hawks move to 5-4 overall and 5-2 in Empire 8 play, while Geneseo improves to 9-0 and 6-0 in E8 action and on the season. Hartwick is next in action at the three-day ITA Tournament hosted by Skidmore in Saratoga Springs, New York on Thursday, Oct. 1.
The Hawks opened the afternoon with a victory at No. 1 doubles, as the senior pairing of Samantha Lantzy (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) and Gianna Leggieri (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake) earned a 6-1 victory. Geneseo answered with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the doubles point heading into singles play.
In singles action, Lantzy provided Hartwick's lone individual victory at No. 1 singles, battling back for a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Pipes. Geneseo earned victories at the remaining five positions, including a pair of three-set matches. At No. 2 singles, Leggieri battled but fell 6-2, 1-6, 6-7 (6-8), while Autumn Millington (Rome, N.Y./Westmoreland) pushed to a tiebreaker in the first set of her match before falling in two sets.
