ONEONTA, N.Y. – Men's soccer battled St. John Fisher at home, coming up just short with a 1-2 decision against the Cardinals.
Hartwick controlled the action in the opening frame, putting four shots on goal.
Wilson Mount (Atlanta, Ga.) recorded three shots in the first half, including one that was saved by the St. John Fisher keeper. Nick Nowack (Shoreham, N.Y.) added two attempts, including a shot on goal.
Mariano Kool (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and
Jon Smith (Bremen, Ga.) also recorded shots for the Hawks as Hartwick looked to break through.
Fisher opened the scoring with less than a minute remaining in the first half, finding the back of the net in the 45
th minute. Hartwick goalkeeper
Jelani Usim (Kingston, Jamaica) made one save in the opening half as the Cardinals carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Cardinals extended their advantage in the 53
rd minute, scoring off of an assist to build momentum early in the second half. Usim kept the Hawks within reach, making five saves in the second half.
Hartwick continued to push late in the match, finally breaking through with just 20 seconds remaining.
Muhammad Traore (Manchester, N.H.) scored his second goal of the season off of an assist from Kool, cutting the Fisher lead 2-1. The Hawks continued to press in the final seconds, but the Cardinals held on for the win.
Hartwick finished with 15 shots, including four on goal, and earned four corners. Usim finished with six saves total in net, pushing the Hawks to move 2-7-0 overall and 1-3-0 in Empire 8 play.
